In recent years, the number of global firms indicating that their executive compensation schemes are tied to Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) metrics has grown rapidly. According to the global ISS Executive Compensation Analytics (ECA) database, the share of firms designating ESG metrics as key performance indicators (KPIs) for their executives has grown from 3% in 2010 to over 30% in 2021. This raises many corporate governance questions, such as what are the reasons behind these arrangements, how these ties are created and what the outcomes are in terms of performance (both ESG and financially).
