The government announced on 24 March that it had temporarily stopped administering BioNTech coronavirus vaccines due to packaging problems in one of the batches, involving cracks in containers and leakage.
A government statement said that although the producer did not find any safety risks associated with problems with the caps on the vials, the use of the jabs was suspended pending an investigation. Medical experts expressed concern that the abrupt halt to the BioNTech programme would hinder the city’s vaccine roll-out. Hong Kong has administered a total of 150,000 doses of the BioNTech vaccine.
