The purpose of the survey is to examine the challenges faced by the European Chambers of Commerce members represented in EuroCham and, more broadly, by Hong Kong’s business community as a result of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and the policies of the HKSAR Government.     < Back Covid-19 – Government suspends all BioNTech jabs over packaging fears SCMP 26 Mar 2021 The government announced on 24 March that it had temporarily stopped administering BioNTech coronavirus vaccines due to packaging problems in one of the batches, involving cracks in containers and leakage. A government statement said that although the producer did not find any safety risks associated with problems with the caps on the vials, the use of the jabs was suspended pending an investigation. Medical experts expressed concern that the abrupt halt to the BioNTech programme would hinder the city’s vaccine roll-out. Hong Kong has administered a total of 150,000 doses of the BioNTech vaccine.     < Back 6 March 2017 EUBIP Position Papers 2017 In line with the European Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong’s contributions to the European Union Business Information Programme (EUBIP), the EuroCham’s Business Councils have produced Position Papers for 2017. With these Position Papers, the ECC wants to facilitate an open and constructive dialogue to make Hong Kong’s business environment more competitive, encourage more European businesses to set up and expand their operations in Hong Kong. The Business Councils bring together professionals from the 1600 European companies operating in Hong Kong. When preparing the Position Papers, the Councils consulted experts and professionals in the respective fields, as well as the EU office in Hong Kong. The Following Business Councils have produced a Position Paper for 2017: The European Automotive Council’s (EAC) aim is for this position paper to lead to overall improvements in the following target areas: Regulations Inhibiting Future Technology, Greener Transportation Including Electrical Mobility and Manpower. EUBIP EAC 2017 Position Paper The Energy and Environment Business Council (EEBC) chose to highlight areas of concern surrounding a Circular Economy, Commodity Pricing, Glass Recycling and Food Waste Management. EUBIP EEBC 2017 Position Paper The Financial Services Business Council (FSBC) selected the status and development of financial technology (FinTech) in Hong Kong. It analyses the extent to which Hong Kong is prepared to harness the new opportunities presented by this emerging economic sector. EUBIP FSBC Position Paper 2017 The Information and Communication Technology Business Council (ICTBC) Position Paper analyses: Smart Cities, ICT Infrastructure Initiatives-Public Sector Data, ICT Application Initiatives-Mobility-as-a-Service, Ramping up Mechanisms for Attracting Competences, Companies and New Technologies, Innovation Procurement and, lastly, Tech Start-Up Ecosystems. EUBIP ICTBC 2017 Position Paper The Intellectual Property Rights Business Council (IPRBC) selected to analyse the following topics: Hong Kong’s Global Role in Counterfeit Trading, IPR Protection- On the Internet, IPR Protection at the Borders, IPR Protection on Inland and, at last, Co-operation and Awareness. EUBIP IPRBC 2017 Position Paper About EUBIP The EUBIP programme has been up and running since June of 2014.     < Back Electoral reform approved unanimously in Beijing The Standard 31 Mar 2021 The National People’s Congress Standing Committee has approved Hong Kong’s electoral system overhaul in Beijing today. The number of directly elected seats in the Legislative Council has been cut to 20 from 35. Electoral reforms were approved unanimously by the National People’s Congress Standing Committee in a vote of 167-0. Tam Yiu-Chung, Hong Kong’s sole representative to the Standing Committee of the NPC, said the amendment of Annex I and Annex II of the Basic Law was approved.     < Back Business group warns Hong Kong travel curbs a 'nightmare' The Standard 4 May 2022 "Hong Kong's stringent pandemic travel restrictions, including frequent flight bans, are a "nightmare" for businesses despite a recent easing of the rules, the European Chamber of Commerce has said. The business group published a letter to the city's leader on Wednesday urging her to drop the "circuit breaker" mechanism for flights, which temporarily suspends a route when an aircraft brings in too many infected passengers." The Standard has written an article based on the Chamber's ongoing efforts to provide recommendations for the government to ease COVID restrictions to better facilitate business in Hong Kong.
